Traditionally the Cherokee carved masks for traditional dances. Today the masks are popular home decor items.  Oftentimes the masks can seem scary or creepy. For this drawing, based on a mask in the home of the artists Father, the skilli (Cherokee for thing that haunts) isn’t necessarily evil but misunderstood. He is holding the sun and moon in balance, bringing life and order to the world.
